O Mestre de Reiki e autor Frank Arjava Petter é conhecido como o homem que mudou a história do Reiki.
O seu primeiro livro, “O Fogo do Reiki”, desvendou novos factos sobre o Reiki e o seu fundador, com base em informações e documentos originais obtidos no Japão, onde viveu e ensinou Reiki.
Frank Arjava Petter é autor dos oito livros de Reiki mais vendidos em 16 línguas e um dos mais respeitados investigadores e professores de Reiki do mundo.
Em entrevista exclusiva ao Reiki Studio Porto, fala-nos sobre o seu novo livro, “Um Com o Reiki”, o seu percurso e a sua experiência pessoal de mais de duas décadas no caminho do Reiki.
1. É mundialmente conhecido pela sua investigação, pelos seus ensinamentos e pelos livros best-seller sobre Reiki, e está prestes a lançar uma nova obra, chamada “Um Com o Reiki”. Como tudo começou e o que o conduziu até ao Reiki?
O meu envolvimento com o Reiki começou com uma dor de cabeça, em 1988. Na altura estava na Índia, no Ashram do Osho, e foi lá que recebi o meu primeiro tratamento de Reiki. Foi uma experiência muito entediante e não me ajudou com a minha dor.
Mais tarde, um analgésico forte resolveu o problema e risquei o Reiki da minha lista de desejos. Mas depois dei por mim a procurar um professor de Reiki, para aprender. Isto surpreendeu-me: porque é que queria aprender algo que achei entediante e ineficaz?
Ainda demorei mais quarto anos para aprender Reiki, mas a resposta à minha pergunta foi revelada doze anos mais tarde, por Chiyoko Yamaguchi, a minha terceira professora de Reiki: num tratamento de Reiki, a alma do recetor é tocada e despertada. Apesar de ele não se aperceber disso, uma vez que a alma é tocada, ela nunca mais volta a adormecer.
Estarmos em contacto com a nossa alma, ligados à natureza cósmica, torna-nos felizes, saudáveis e realizados. Pode-se observá-lo em cada tratamento de Reiki que se dá: tanto os praticantes que conduzem o tratamento como os recetores irradiam uma grande paz, serenidade e bem-aventurança, por causa disso…
2. O que podem as pessoas esperar de “Um Com o Reiki”? Quando vai estar disponível?
O melhor é não esperar nada, e simplesmente permanecer profundamente enraizado no momento presente. Então, tudo o que acontece se torna numa surpresa, numa bênção.
“Um Com o Reiki” é sobre o background espiritual do Reiki, e se os leitores se divertirem tanto a lê-lo como eu a escrevê-lo, fico feliz. A ideia para este livro foi partilhar com todos o porquê de Mikao Usui ter desenvolvido e ensinado Reiki tal como o fez.
O ensino de Reiki é um todo orgânico, tudo nele faz perfeito sentido. Quando considerado na sua totalidade e compreendido como tal, o praticante relaxa, e o Reiki será então um prazer vitalício.
O livro está publicado e disponível em alemão e em breve estará disponível em inglês. Tal como com “Isto é Reiki” (Editora Pensamento), eu mesmo fiz a tradução para inglês, e de momento estamos na fase de edição.
3. O que significa para si o Reiki, pessoalmente? Como afetou a sua vida?
O Reiki faz parte da nossa rotina diária. Os meus pais, o meu irmão, a minha mulher, a família dela e os nossos filhos praticam Reiki. Com o passar dos anos, para mim tornou-se algo tão natural como respirar. Não requer uma envolvência formal, regras, pensamentos, moral: é a coisa mais natural e simples do mundo.
Chiyoko Yamaguchi respondia muitas vezes quando lhe perguntavam como se deve começar um tratamento, se era preciso uma oração ou meditação especial. Ela ria-se e dizia: “Vocês pensam demasiado! Simplesmente ponham as mãos sobre o corpo: a energia liga-se. Tiram as mãos: a energia desliga-se. Ligar/desligar, só isso”.
O efeito mais extraordinário do Reiki na minha vida foi o nascimento dos nossos filhos. A minha mulher foi diagnosticada como infértil na adolescência. Depois de um ano e meio de tratamentos diários ela engravidou, sem hormonas nem nada artificial. Apenas Reiki. E voltou a acontecer.
Os médicos ficaram muito surpreendidos e disseram-nos, depois de descobrirmos que estávamos à espera do nosso segundo filho: “já ganharam a lotaria uma vez, e agora outra? O que se passa com vocês?”
4. A sua investigação trouxe uma nova visão da prática e da história do Reiki. O que é que as pessoas devem saber sobre o Reiki e a prática original de Mikao Usui?
O Reiki é ação iluminada, se souber isto tudo o resto é insignificante. As técnicas podem ser úteis, mas em última análise o Reiki é para descobrir quem é e qual é a sua natureza/essência. Quando se vislumbra essa descoberta, a vida torna-se num doce néctar.
A história do Reiki é o meu hobby, talvez uma obsessão. Não pode imaginar quanto tempo e esforço, conflito, frustração, alegria, gargalhadas e diversão isto me tem trazido nos últimos 23 anos da minha vida. Por isso, se me pergunta o que alguém precisa de saber, eu diria que quanto mais, melhor.
Contudo, para apenas praticar Reiki uma pessoa não precisa de qualquer conhecimento prévio, exceto ter sido corretamente iniciada, e conhecer e incorporar os Gokai (os Cinco Princípios de Reiki) no seu quotidiano.
Para os que estão mais profundamente interessados e que querem partilhar o Reiki com outros, é muito útil saber tanto da história do Reiki quanto tenha sido descoberto até ao momento e conhecer alguns aspetos importantes da cultura japonesa, sem os quais uma compreensão adequada do Reiki não é possível.
5. Em que momento da história do Reiki começaram a ser introduzidas mudanças ao método original de Mikao Usui?
Em todas as escolas espirituais, as mudanças são introduzidas quando o mestre desaparece. Esta parece ser a inevitável natureza humana. Enquanto o Mestre – e Usui Sensei era considerado um Mestre iluminado – está vivo, ele é apenas ele próprio e não é necessária muita estrutura. Ele apenas pratica o seu método.
Quando ele morre, e a sua escola ou associação é conduzida por alguém que não teve a mesma experiência, ou por um grupo de pessoas, as coisas começam a mudar. Seis semanas depois da morte de Usui Sensei, vinte dos seus alunos mais avançados receberam o estatuto de Dai Shihan (grande professor) e foram constituídos membros da direção da Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai – a associação de Usui Sensei.
Eles deram continuidade à linhagem tão bem quanto podiam, mas como se pode substituir o fundador de um caminho espiritual? Sabendo o que estava para acontecer após a sua transição, Usui Sensei preparou bem o desenvolvimento do Reiki depois da sua partida: se se pensar que milhões de pessoas adoram e praticam o Reiki em todo o mundo, em todas as culturas e religiões, vê-se o seu génio.
Usui Sensei deu-nos, literalmente, para as mãos a chave para compreendermos o Reiki. Apenas é necessário um coração aberto e uma mente limpa e consciente para o compreender. Dar e receber Reiki coloca-o no momento presente, e é aí que a verdadeira viagem começa.
6. Quais foram as descobertas mais surpreendentes e preciosas que fez sobre o Reiki?
A magia do Reiki está no facto de ser a nossa natureza, inata em todos os seres humanos, ser capaz de desencadear o processo de cura do nosso próprio corpo e do das outras pessoas.
A função do professor de Reiki é apenas retirar o que não lhe pertence e dar-lhe o que já é seu! Abraçar o seu direito de nascimento é o que há de mais precioso na vida.
A cura, contudo, é apenas uma pequena parte desse mistério: o verdadeiro propósito é encontrar-se a si mesmo. E isto é o que eu vejo nas pessoas que praticam com diligência e devoção; elas centram-se no seu próprio ser, e em consequência disso transformam-se.
7. Com base na sua experiência de ensino de Reiki no Japão e à volta do mundo, ainda existem muitas diferenças entre a forma japonesa e ocidental de viver e praticar Reiki?
O Reiki é uma forma de vida, e muitos adeptos do Reiki fora do Japão levam este aspeto muito a sério – e de uma forma muito bela. É natural que uma técnica se ajuste, de alguma forma, às diferentes pessoas e culturas que encontra, mas a essência tem que permanecer a mesma. Repare no Budismo, por exemplo: o budismo japonês é diferente do indiano e do português, mas a mensagem é a mesma em todos eles.
Devido à crença numa só vida, a cultura ocidental é um pouco orientada para objetivos. “Quero uma coisa e quero-a agora”. Por isso, as pessoas no Ocidente tendem a praticar Reiki para alcançar algo. As nossas filosofias new age são quase todas orientadas no sentido de manipular a vida e as suas circunstâncias em nosso benefício, transformando a nossa atitude em materialismo espiritual.
O Reiki é o exacto oposto disso: não queremos ganhar algo, mas aprender a estar deliciosamente vazios. Este vazio é igual para um japonês ou para qualquer outra pessoa. O Reiki encerra uma promessa para quem pratica com todo o coração. Nas palavras de Mikao Usui, o Reiki é “A arte secreta de convidar a felicidade e o remédio espiritual para todas as doenças”.
8. O seu primeiro livro chama-se “O Fogo do Reiki”, por causa da forma como o Reiki se espalhou como fogo pelo mundo e também porque derrete toda a separação. Como gostaria de ver o Reiki evoluir? Que mudanças gostava de ver?
O que há de fantástico no Reiki é que por mais que as pessoas tentem mudá-lo, ele permanece sempre puro e virgem! O Reiki que sai das nossas mãos, das minhas mãos, das mãos de toda a gente, é absolutamente o mesmo e é belo.
A palavra Reiki significa literalmente “Energia da Alma”. A alma não é nada de pessoal, ela pertence a todos nós, é o tesouro coletivo da humanidade. Olhando para o termo Reiki, isto tem algumas implicações: consegue conceber alguém a melhorar o Reiki? A melhorar a Energia da Alma? Devem estar loucos!
Então, se me pergunta como gostaria de ver o Reiki evoluir, consigo apenas dizer-lhe aquilo de que estou cansado. Estou cansado de ver professores altivos, que praticam Reiki para ganhar algo, seja fama ou fortuna, poder ou dinheiro, ou para serem melhores do que os outros.
O Reiki é um caminho para desintegrar o ego e abrir mão dele. Eu desejo ver praticantes de Reiki que são amorosos, compassivos e guiados pelo poder da alma: esse é o futuro.
9. Vai estar em Lisboa, em breve, para liderar dois seminários de Reiki. Quando e onde vão decorrer?
Eu vou ensinar Jikiden Reiki em Lisboa, de 7 a 11 de outubro. Jikiden Reiki significa transmissão direta e é o que a minha professora, Chiyoko Yamaguchi, aprendeu com o seu professor, Chujiro Hayashi. Que eu saiba, são os únicos ensinamentos tradicionais originais a serem abertamente ensinados em público.

Reiki Master and author Frank Arjava Petter is known as the man who changed the history of Reiki. His first book, “Reiki Fire”, unveiled new facts about Reiki and its founder, based on original documents and information found in Japan, where he lived and taught Reiki.
He is the author of the eight best-selling Reiki books in 16 languages and one of the most respected Reiki researchers and teachers in the world.
In an exclusive interview to Reiki Studio Porto, Frank Arjava Petter talks to us about his new book, “One With Reiki”, his journey and his personal experience of over two decades in the path of Reiki.
1. You are worldly known for your Reiki research, teachings and best-selling books, and you are about to release a new one, called “One with Reiki.” How did it all begin and what drew you to Reiki in the first place?
My involvement with Reiki began with a headache in 1988. I was in India at the Osho Ashram at the time, and it was there that I received my first Reiki treatment. It was the most boring experience and did not help me with my pain.
Afterwards, a strong painkiller did the job and I crossed Reiki off my wish list. But then I found myself looking for a Reiki Teacher, to learn it. This surprised me: why did I want to learn something that I found boring and ineffective?
It took another four years to learn Reiki, but the answer to my question was revealed twelve years later by Chiyoko Yamaguchi, my third Reiki Teacher: in a Reiki treatment, the soul of the receiver is tickled and awakened. Even though he may not be aware of it, once the soul is touched it can never go to sleep again.
Being in touch with your soul, connected to the cosmic source, makes you happy, healthy and content. You can see this in every Reiki treatment you give: both the treatment givers and the receivers radiate such peace, serenity and bliss, because of this…
2. What can people expect from “One With Reiki”? When will it be available?
The best is not to expect anything and just let yourself be deeply rooted in the present moment. Then everything that happens becomes a surprise, a blessing.
“One with Reiki” is about the spiritual background of Reiki and if the readers have as much fun reading as I did writing it, I’d be happy. The idea for this book was to share with everyone why Usui Sensei developed and taught Reiki as he did.
The Reiki teaching is one organic whole and in it everything makes perfect sense. When embraced in its totality and understood as such, the practitioner relaxes, and Reiki will then be a life-long pleasure.
The book is published and available in German and will be available in English soon. Like with “This is Reiki” (which is translated into Portuguese and published by Pensamento under the title “Isto é Reiki), I did the translation into English myself and at the moment we are in the process of editing. Hopefully, it will be published by Lotus Press, Wisconsin, at the end of 2015.
3. What does Reiki mean to you, personally? How did it affect your life?
Reiki is part of our daily routine. Both my parents, my brother, my wife, her family and our kids practice Reiki. Over the years, it has become something like breathing to me. It does not require a formal setting, no rules, no thoughts, no morals: it is the most natural and most simple thing in the world.
Chiyoko Yamaguchi often answered when asked about how one begins a treatment, whether it needed a special prayer or meditation. She laughed and said “You think too much! Just place your hands on the body: the energy is on. You take them away: the energy switches off. On- off, that’s all. “
The most stunning effect on Reiki on my life was the birth of our kids. My wife was diagnosed to be medically infertile in her teens and after one and a half years of daily treatments she got pregnant without hormones or anything artificial. Just Reiki. And then it happened again.
The doctors were so surprised and said after we found out we were pregnant for the second time: You already won in the lottery once and now, again? What is it with you people?
4. Your investigation brought to light a new vision of Reiki practice and history. What should people know about Reiki and Mikao Usui’s original practice?
Reiki is enlightened action and if you know this all else is meaningless. Techniques may be useful, but ultimately Reiki is all about you finding out who you are and what your nature/essence is. Once you get a glimpse of that, your life turns into nectar.
Reiki history is my hobby, perhaps an obsession. You cannot imagine how much time and effort, conflict, frustration, joy, laughter and fun this has brought to the past 23 years of my life. So if you ask me what someone needs to know, I would say the more, the better.
However, just to practice Reiki one needs no previous knowledge at all except for having been properly initiated, and to know and to incorporate the Gokai (the Five Reiki Principles) into one’s daily life.
For those who are interested more deeply and want to share Reiki with others, it is useful to know as much of the Reiki history as has been uncovered until today, and to know some important aspects of Japanese culture without which a proper understanding of Reiki is not possible.
5. At which point in Reiki history did changes begin to be introduced in Mikao Usui’s original method?
In all spiritual schools, changes are made once the Master is gone. This seems to be unavoidable human nature. While the Master – and Usui Sensei was considered to be an enlightened Master – is alive, he is just himself and not much structure is needed. He just does his thing.
After he dies, and his school or association is run by someone who did not have the same experience, or by a group of people, things begin to change. Six weeks before Usui Sensei’s death, twenty of his senior students were given the Dai Shihan (great teacher) status and were made Board Members of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai- Usui Sensei’s association.
They continued the lineage as best as they could, but how can you substitute the founder of a spiritual path? Knowing what was about to happen after his transition, Usui Sensei prepared the development of Reiki after his departure well: if you think that Millions of people love and practice Reiki all over the world, in all cultures and from all religions, you see his genius.
Usui Sensei gave us the key to understanding Reiki literally into our own hands. It just takes an open heart, and a clear and conscious mind to understand it. Giving or receiving Reiki puts you into the present moment, and this is where the real journey begins.
6. Which were your most surprising and precious findings about Reiki?
The magic of Reiki is that it is our inborn human nature to be able to jumpstart the healing process in our own body and that of our fellow men.
The function of the Reiki teacher is merely to take away what does not belong to you and to give you what is already yours! Embracing your birthright is the most precious thing in life.
Healing, though, is only a small part of that mystery: the real thing is to find yourself. And this is what I see with people who practice diligently and devotedly; they settle into their own being and thus are transformed.
7. Based on your experience teaching Reiki in Japan and all over the world, are there still many differences between the Japanese and Western ways of living and practicing Reiki?
Reiki is a way of life and many Reiki lovers outside of Japan take this very seriously – and beautifully. It is natural that a technique adjusts somewhat to the different people and cultures it meets, but the core must remain the same. Look at Buddhism for example: Japanese Buddhism is different from Indian or Portuguese Buddhism, but the message is the same in all of them.
Due to its belief in a single life, Western culture is somewhat goal oriented. I want something and I want it now. So people in the West tend to practice Reiki to get something. Our new age philosophies are almost all geared towards manipulating life and its circumstances to our advantage, turning our attitude into spiritual materialism.
Reiki is the exact opposite of that: we don’t want to gain something but learn to be deliciously empty. This emptiness is the same for a Japanese or anyone else for that matter and Reiki holds a promise for one who practices it with his whole heart. In Usui Sensei’s words, Reiki is “The secret art of happiness and the spiritual medicine for all illness”.
8. Your first book is called “Reiki Fire,” because of the way Reiki spread like wildfire through the world and also because it melts all separation. How would you like to see Reiki evolve? What changes would you like to see happening?
The amazing thing about Reiki is that no matter how people try to change it, it always remains pure and virgin! The Reiki that comes out of your hands, my hands, everyone’s hands is absolutely the same and beautiful.
The word Reiki literally means “Soul energy.” The soul is nothing personal, it belongs to all of us, it is the collective treasure of humanity. Looking at the term Reiki this has certain implications: can you conceive of someone improving upon Reiki? Improve Soul Energy? You must be crazy!
So if you ask how I would like to see Reiki evolve, I can only tell you what I am tired of. I am tired of seeing inflated Reiki teachers who practice Reiki to gain something, whether it is fame or fortune, power or money, or being better than others.
Reiki is a path to disintegrating, and letting go of the ego. I long to see Reiki people who are loving, compassionate and guided by the power of soul: This is the future.
9. You will be in Lisbon soon, to lead two Reiki seminars. When and where will they take place?
I will be teaching Jikiden Reiki in Lisbon from October 7-11. Jikiden Reiki means direct transmission and it is what my teacher, Chiyoko Yamaguchi, learned from her teacher, Chujiro Hayashi. As far as I know this is the only traditional original teaching that is openly taught in public.
